The Smoke Hollow Electric Smoker is a very reasonably-priced smoker that is very well built and should perform well, with a bit of tweaking and trial and error.
Please read on for more information and our concluding thoughts.
At first blush, you’re likely to find the cabinet and footing very solid, in addition to the well-constructed magnetized door closure. It comes with two sturdy cooking grates that measure 16 by 14 inches, which is good enough for rib racks, whole turkeys and other large cuts/game.
The majority of users find that this model can hold a set temperature well, but the stock temperature gauge should not be trusted without cross checking it with another probe first. This is always a wise thing to do in our view. In addition, the venting seems a bit odd and some have drilled it out to promote greater air flow. The 1,500 watt heating element is definitely on the hot side, and should make this smoker good at dealing with cold ambient environments.
Although reportedly being good for cold smoking for fish, bacon and cheese, this model can be challenging for many users to get smoking well at cooler temperatures. This may be in part due to the slightly stifled air venting system. As a result, many users opt for an aftermarket smoke generator, such as the insanely popular A-maze-n Pellet Smoker. I second this add on, particularly if you need to boost smoke production for long cold smokes.
Perhaps the biggest gripe of all, however, is the undersized water pan and chip tray. This comes up a lot, with some taking it upon themselves to modify or swap them out entirely with diy or aftermarket materials.
Beyond the aforementioned issues though, the Smoke Hollow 30162E really does smoke well, and has a record of great longevity. This is really all you can ask for in a sub $200 unit! This model’s user manual can be found here.
Smoking Capacity & Dimensions
This is a small, compact smoker, which is about 47 pounds in weight and measures 22 inches in width, 19 inches deep, and 38 inches high. Nevertheless, it holds about 500 square inches of smoking surface area – which is actually quite good for such a small smoker.
Consensus of Users
Currently holding a 4.4 out of 5.0 on amazon.com, it’s safe to say that this model is popular and generally well-received. Nevertheless, in addition to the issues mentioned above, some users complained that this smoker seemed to be somewhat poorly-made: things like exposed insulation and lose, wobbly parts, etc.
Comments like this were very few, and as we said earlier, the vast majority of users found it very well-made throughout.
Price & Value
Presently hovering around $200, this smoker is a fairly good deal but, in my view, cannot surpass the value of some other options in this price range, most notable of which being the Old Smokey Electric smoker.
The Smoke Hollow Electric Smoker is a good, but not great electric smoker for those shopping in the $200 range. In addition, if you are interested in cold smoking, it may require a bit of time and costly aftermarket modifications that will add to the purchase price.
